My Experience with Notion AI

I want to be upfront about something before diving in: Notion AI is not a standalone AI product. It's AI that lives inside your Notion workspace. That distinction matters more than almost anything else you could say about it, because it completely defines both its strengths and its limits.

I've been using Notion as my main workspace for about two years — project tracking, meeting notes, research docs, SOPs, the lot. When Notion AI launched, I was skeptical. Another AI writing assistant bolted onto a product? Didn't need one. But I was wrong about what it actually does well.

The Real Killer Feature: Q&A Over Your Entire Workspace

The moment Notion AI clicked for me was the first time I typed "What did we decide about the API rate limits in Q3?" into the AI search bar. It pulled the answer from a meeting notes page I had written four months earlier — quoted the exact line, linked the source. I hadn't thought about that page since I wrote it. That's the use case no other AI tool nails without a lot of painful setup: it already has your context. ChatGPT doesn't know what was in your last sprint retro. Notion AI does, because you wrote it there.

For anyone running a team on Notion, this Q&A feature is legitimately transformative. Instead of searching through pages manually or pestering teammates with "where did we document X?", you just ask. It's not perfect — the retrieval can miss things, and if your notes are vague or disorganized, the answers will be too — but it works well enough that I use it daily.

AI Writing Assist: Best for Editing, Not Generation

Notion AI can draft content from scratch, but honestly that's not where it shines. What it's genuinely good at is editing and reformatting content you've already written. Paste in a wall of meeting notes, hit "Summarize", and get a clean bullet-point summary in seconds. Ask it to "improve the tone" on a client-facing doc and it does a decent job tightening things up. Ask it to extract action items from a page and it's surprisingly reliable.

Where I don't reach for it: creative writing, long-form articles, anything requiring nuanced argument. The underlying model isn't Claude or GPT-4. It's noticeably weaker on reasoning-heavy tasks. I still switch to Claude in a separate tab for anything complex — Notion AI handles the within-workspace busywork.

Autofill in Databases: Genuinely Useful

One underrated feature: AI Autofill for database properties. I have a database of client projects, and I set up an autofill property that generates a one-sentence summary of each project based on its page content. When I add a new project and fill in the notes, the summary writes itself. I also use it to auto-categorize entries and generate status tags. For anyone managing a large Notion database, this is a real time saver — not flashy, but quietly useful every day.

How It Compares to ChatGPT for Knowledge Management

People sometimes ask: "Can't I just copy-paste my Notion notes into ChatGPT?" Technically yes, but that completely misses the point. Notion AI has access to your entire workspace automatically — hundreds of pages, years of notes. You don't copy anything. You don't maintain a separate system. The AI is already inside the tool you use to write everything. That integration is the product. ChatGPT is more capable as a general AI, but for querying and managing your own accumulated knowledge in Notion, there's no contest.

Honest Weaknesses

It's only as good as your workspace. I can't stress this enough. If your Notion is a mess of half-finished pages, abandoned projects, and untagged docs (no judgment, mine was like that for a year), the AI will give you messy, unreliable answers. The old computing principle applies: garbage in, garbage out. Notion AI amplifies whatever organizational quality your workspace already has — it doesn't fix a disorganized system.

Creative writing is also a weak spot. If I need to write a compelling essay or a punchy product launch email, I'm not reaching for Notion AI. The output reads noticeably more generic than what I get from Claude. And it can occasionally hallucinate page content that doesn't quite match what I wrote — rare, but it happens.

Is the Cost Worth It?

Notion AI used to be a separate $10/month add-on. As of early 2026, AI is bundled into Notion's Plus and Business plans (starting around $16/month total). If you're already paying for a Notion plan, the AI features just come with it — so the question of "is it worth it" mostly resolves itself if you're already a Notion user.

If you're not a Notion user, don't subscribe just for the AI. The AI only makes sense inside an established Notion workflow. Start with Notion, use it for a few months, then the AI features will feel like a natural extension rather than a solution looking for a problem.

Bottom line: Notion AI is my favorite productivity AI feature I didn't know I needed — but only because I already lived inside Notion. If that's you too, it's a genuinely valuable upgrade. If you're not a Notion user, look elsewhere.
